French to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Construction / Civil Engineering / call for tenders to build a plant
French term or phrase: les règles de l'art
Context: ENGAGEMENTS FERMES DE L'ENTREPRENEUR
"L'entrepreneur est obligé ....de procéder à toute épreuve et conformément aux plans et préscriptions, ceci d'après les règles de l'art et de l'état actuel de la technique."

Up to this point, I have been translating "les règles de l'art" as "rules of the trade", because the context had more to do with conduct than technology. In this context, however, "l'état actuel de la technique" is definitely the current state of the art of the technology", so am I right to still translate "les règles de l'art" as "according to the rules of the trade" in this context too? I wish you could see the entire text - full of barbs like these! A lot of "Swiss cheese"!

I agree perfectly and am changing all my "according to the rules of the trade" to your suggestion. "best practice" already in Kudoz, but I like your translation better!
