relating to data processing, records and privacy
Explanation:
I'm not certain, but "libertés" sounds like what is usually referred to in the Anglo-Saxon legislative context as privacy issues. Hopefully, someone else will be able to confirm this, or correct me if I'm wrong.

agree  Bourth (X): Diff. countries have different names and systems. Here in NZ, these matters are (or were, back in the 1970s) all covered by the "Privacy Commissioner"

-> You're right. Anyway, what's true in NZ is also true in Oz.

agree  William Stein: Sounds good. "Privacy" is a type of civil liberty and that's what meant.

Explanation:
Dans le cas d'une loi, mieux vaut la traduire come tel.

Je voie souvent "informatique" pour traduire "computer" comme adjectif et dans les jugements de la Cour suprême du Canada, on traduit "informatique" par "computer". Voir l'exemple. Plus, c'est plus le term utilisé.

neutral  Nikki Scott-Despaigne: It is the FR equivalent & the asker is a GB national, so, presumably translating for a GB client. H'ever, altho' often helpful, it is perhaps not a good idea to use the English and Welsh statute as a direct subsitute - the proivisions are not identical!

agree  Nooz: I would use this rather than the English statute which may not be exactly equivalent.

article 27 of France's data protection legislation

Explanation:
"l'article 27 de la loi n° 78-17 du 6 janvier 1978, relative à l'informatique, aux fichiers et aux libertés"

As a general rule, this ought not to be translated, but of course that is probably not much help for your client. A practical way round it might be to leave it as is (in inverted commas, in italics, or whatever) and then provide something along the following lines in brackets afterwards :

"article 27 of France's data protection legislation"

I'd be wary of drawing a strict parallel and substituting the title of the E & W statute for the French one - the provisions are not identical. A literal translation may sometimes work as French titles in such circumstances are generally very descriptive. This one is no exception. It is probably not necessary to find exact equivalent for every element in the French title. The civil liberties idea is inherent and understood in the E & W legislation anyway. It's no doubt considered that it goes without saying!

Try to bear in mind who will be reading your final text and go for the most appropriate of the suggestions you have here!
