English term or phrase: more than inciting to emulation...
I' confused by the paragraph like this:" We do not try to emulate our fathers and our past; ours is the only way people can be forced to do many things that must be done. But they pretend not to see it. Why? the work people we revere have done in the past, more than inciting to emulation, gives us heart."

I wonder what does " more than inciting to emulation, gives us heart " mean?

not only encouraging us to do likewise...
Explanation:
The work that people we admire have done in the past does morethan just encouraging us to do likewise; it heartens us.

we are not incited to emulate (but are heartened, which is greater)

Explanation:
The author seems (only "seems", because this is such a muddled bit of writing) to have already said that they do not emulate. So, this phrase seems to be saying that although they are not incited to emulate the "work people we revere have done in the past", that work provides something even greater than incitement to emulate what has already been done, i.e. it heartens them in pursuing whatever it is that the text goes on to say that they are pursuing.

agree  Tina Vonhof (X): In that case I would prefer "rather than", not "more than". It is indeed a muddled piece of writing.
