Produced with whole, raw cow's milk during the forage season. Feed comprises mainly spontaneous plant species, possibly in hay form, from the Hyblean plateau. Traditional processing with wooden utensils.
Ripening
In cool, well-aired locations, with natural geological walls that ensure 14-16°C and 80-90% humidity. The cheeses are paired with fine cord and hung over wooden beams; they may be left to ripen even longer than 12 months.

Smooth, fine, compact crust; golden or straw yellow tending to brown as it ages; also dipped in olive oil. White curd tending to straw yellow.

Fotografata dal satellite, Torino ha un colore dominante: il verde. Più di 17 milioni di metri quadrati di aree naturali, 18 metri quadrati di verde per abitante, 300.000 fiori che ogni anno vengono coltivati nelle aiuole pubbliche, 400 chilometri di viali alberati con oltre 60.000 piante, 100.000 alberi nei giardini pubblici e 70 chilometri di parchi lungo il corso di 4 fiumi: un patrimonio che è quadruplicato negli ultimi trent’anni.
La natura è stata generosa con Torino che è circondata a sud dalle bellissime colline del Chierese e del Monferrato e a Nord, dall’imponente profilo dell’arco alpino, che ha contribuito all’assegnazione dei XX Giochi Olimpici Invernali.

DESIGN
Lo stile, a Torino, non è solo una caratteristica distintiva della città. E’ il design. Quello che nasce dalle matite di Bertone, Giugiaro e Pininfarina per dare forma ad automobili bellissime e che coinvolge anche i giovani creativi del Politecnico e dell’Istituto Europeo di Design, oltre alle 100 imprese che si occupano di design industriale. Una contaminazione tra disegno e oggetti che passa attraverso la tradizione di architetti come Carlo Mollino, Annibale Rigotti e Andrea Bruno e che porterà Torino ad organizzare nel 2008, prima città in Italia, il Congresso Mondiale degli Architetti.

Nel 1560, per festeggiare il trasferimento della capitale ducale da Chambéry a Torino, Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia servì simbolicamente alla città una fumante tazza di cioccolata. Inizia così la lunga storia d’amore tra Torino e il cioccolato: una passione che ha stimolato nei secoli la fantasia dei maestri cioccolatieri e creato specialità note in tutto il mondo come il gianduiotto, la crema di cacao e nocciola, il gelato da passeggio. CAFFÈ STORICI
“Che si dice stamattina nei Caffè?” Per essere informato sulla situazione politica, Re Vittorio Emanuele II rivolgeva spesso questa domanda ai propri consiglieri, perché parte della storia d’Italia è stata scritta proprio nei Caffè di Torino. Cavour era solito recarsi al Caffè Fiorio, Massimo D’Azeglio, Giolitti ed Einaudi preferivano Baratti&Milano, mentre De Gasperi si rilassava al Caffè Torino. Alexandre Dumas era un habitué del Bicerin (il “bicchierino”), Guido Gozzano, frequentava le sale Art Nouveau di Mulassano, Platti era il locale ideale di Cesare Pavese.

Turin is a city where style is a fact of life. But it also design. Take Bertone, Giugiaro and Pininfarina, designers whose talent created beautiful cars. Take the style generated by young designers from the Polytechnic and IED – the European Design Institute. Take over 100 industrial design businesses. In 1560, Duke Emanuele Filiberto of Savoia celebrated moving his capital from Chambéry to Turin by serving the city a symbolic cup of steaming hot chocolate, initiating Turin’s eternal love affair with chocolate. Over the centuries, the fertile imagination of zealous master chocolatiers created some tasty items like the “gianduiotto”, cocoa and hazelnut cream, ice cream cones. These days, Turin has an annual chocolate bash called Cioccolatò (link interno in what’s on): two weeks of chocoholic fun, events, tastings, shows and performing arts.

“What news from the cafés today?” King Vittorio Emanuele II would often ask his counsellors when he wanted the low-down on the political situation. If we’re going to be honest, a chapter of Italian history was actually written in Turin cafés. Cavour was a patron of Caffè Fiorio, but Massimo D’Azeglio, Giolitti and Einaudi preferred Baratti&Milano. De Gasperi used to wind down at Caffè Torino. Alexandre Dumas was a habitué of Bicerin (the “snifter”), Guido Gozzano liked the Art Nouveau rooms in Mulassano, but Platti was Cesare Pavese’s favourite.
Things haven’t change much and the historic cafés are the heart and soul of Turin tradition and culture: a safe bet for tasting some special subalpine pastries in oh-so-chic style.

The Torinese demand for shopping “en plein air” is amply met by the number and variety of its markets: more than 60 open-air venues to browse, happen upon objects from the past, surrounded by colour and atmosphere. Famossisima e immortale, Venezia è una città dinamica che sta lavorando per affermarsi sempre più come destinazione per turisti ed eventi di qualità. In quest’ottica, ecco nelle pagine che seguono alcune chiavi di lettura per proporla attraverso itinerari, attività e luoghi che, sospesi fra passato e futuro, non smettono mai di stupire.
Venezia, dimostrando di non essere una città-museo ferma al proprio passato, sta buttandosi a capofitto in progetti atti a sostenere un turismo di qualità, a rivitalizzare palazzi di pregio e zone trascurate, e portare in città nuove attività produttive confacenti alla natura di questo particolarissimo tessuto urbano.
Fra le iniziative di maggiore richiamo il progetto per un nuovo Palazzo del Cinema all’isola del Lido, con una sala avveniristica da 2.500 posti da utilizzare sia per il cinema sia per congressi ed eventi. La gara internazionale per il progetto è stata vinta a maggio dallo studio di architettura 5+1 & Ricciotti, e il nuovo edificio, ora in attesa di fondi per la costruzione, è un esempio di progettazione contemporanea atta a “ringiovanire” l’immagine della città. Così come il nuovo ponte sul Canal Grande in fase di collaudo, progettato dall’architetto Santiago Calatrava, chiamato Ponte di luce per la sua trasparenza e l’illuminazione notturna, che collegherà la terraferma con la stazione ferroviaria di Venezia.
Nel novembre 2007 sarà pronto invece il People Mover, ovvero la funicolare che a un’altezza di 857 metri collegherà in tre minuti e mezzo (invece dei 20 minuti via terra) il Tronchetto, ampio parcheggio in terraferma, e Piazzale Roma.
Nello stesso ordine di idee è stato recuperato uno stabilimento industriale in disuso nel quartiere della Giudecca: da luglio 3.000 mq su tre piani, divisi in 21 lotti, sono disponibili per piccole e medie imprese, stimolando il loro ritorno in città. Anche alcuni spazi dell’Arsenale, la darsena fortificata di Venezia che risale al Medioevo e rappresenta circa un settimo dell’intera città, sono stati dati in gestione da due anni alla società Arsenale di Venezia per la loro valorizzazione e il loro completo recupero. Parte è già stata affittata dalla Biennale di Venezia per le mostre. Fra i palazzi storici che hanno recentemente aperto agli eventi privati citiamo Ca’ Mocenigo Gambara, costruita nel XVII secolo nei pressi del Ponte dell’Accademia e affrescata dal Canaletto, che da maggio, in seguito a un accurato restauro, opera come un razionale centro per meeting e convegni per 100 persone.
Gondole e champagne
L’esperienza di un “passaggio” nell’imbarcazione di legno simbolo di Venezia è davvero una di quelle cose che non si possono perdere: l’emozione raggiunge il culmine nel silenzio della notte scivolando fra i canali della laguna, una coppa di champagne in mano... Usata per il trasporto delle persone, oggi principalmente turisti, la gondola è lunga 11,10 metri e larga 1,42 con lo scafo slanciato e di colore nero, il fondo piatto e le estremità rialzate. La voga e le manovre nei canali stretti di Venezia rappresentano un gioco d’equilibrio che riposa non solo sull’abilità del gondoliere ma anche sulla struttura della gondola. La costruzione è laboriosa: le parti della barca sono circa 280 e almeno otto i tipi di legno utilizzato. Le curvature delle tavole sono ottenute bagnando e scaldando il legno con il fuoco, metodo ancora praticato negli squèri, i cantieri tradizionali di costruzione. Merita una visita l’antico Squèro Tramontin, la cui attività risale al 1887, dove si possono vedere i maestri gondolieri al lavoro.
Esistono inoltre gondole di dimensioni monumentali, usate durante i cortei acquei delle tante feste e celebrazioni veneziane, fra cui la Regata Storica (prima domenica di settembre), la Regata delle Befane (giorno dell’Epifania) e il corteo acqueo in maschera del Carnevale, chiamate bissone (che significa grande serpente), le cui prue si trasformano in mostri marini, draghi e altri motivi allegorici.
«La posizione migliore per seguire lo spettacolo di una parata storica è dall’acqua» commenta Alessandro Sbrogiò, titolare del DMC veneziano Target Motivation. «E qui interveniamo noi, fornendo barche leggere per portare i gruppi aziendali in prima fila e seguire i cortei acquei da vicino». E sempre in tema di imbarcazioni, Target Motivation può anche trasformare gli spettatori in attori, organizzando per i gruppi regate in dragon boat, barche a remi con una capienza di 30 persone, nel quadro per esempio di un programma di team building in cui le squadre si affrontano sull’acqua. Target Motivation è però un DMC a 360 gradi e un esperto PCO che gestisce un migliaio di allotment di alto livello nei migliori alberghi veneziani e si avvale della consulenza di docenti universitari per la realizzazione di itinerari e programmi originali. «Uno dei programmi più apprezzati dai nostri clienti per un incentive o un post conference è il tour dei bacari, le antiche osterie veneziane» continua Alessandro Sbrogiò. «Dividiamo gli ospiti in piccoli gruppi e li portiamo a degustare specialità e vini tipici in tre bacari, un po’ come fanno gli spagnoli con le tapas. È un’occasione per socializzare in maniera divertente per due ore: il programma si conclude pranzando o cenando tutti insieme in un locale storico».
Secret gardens
Può sorprendere apprendere che Venezia è il centro storico che ha più giardini in tutta Italia. Gli stessi campi e campielli un tempo erano veri e propri campi verdi. Oggi i giardini privati, nascosti allo sguardo dei passanti, confinano l’uno con l’altro alle spalle dei palazzi creando ampie macchie di verde. Si deve in parte agli ordini religiosi la conservazione di bellissimi giardini e orti: la varietà della vegetazione è dovuta al microclima di Venezia, diverso fra nord e sud della Laguna: mediterraneo alla Giudecca, continentale nel nord della Laguna per via della bora (vento freddo).
Fra i giardini privati toccati dagli itinerari specializzati, ne segnaliamo due seicenteschi: quello di Palazzo Cappello, nel quartiere di Santa Croce, sede della Soprintendenza Regionale per i Beni Ambientali, dove spicca, fra le mutevoli fioriture, l’elegante loggia neoclassica confinante con il secondo, il giardino di Palazzo Gradenigo, tuttora di proprietà dei discendenti della nobile famiglia, percorso da due pergole e da variopinte bordure miste.
Poi ci sono i giardini dei Chiostri e orto di clausura del Convento di San Francesco della Vigna a Castello, trecentesco complesso che ricorda nel nome l’antica vigna donata ai frati dal figlio del doge Ziani nel 1253, e i Chiostri e orto del Convento del Redentore alla Giudecca, uno spazio rimasto inalterato nei secoli all’ombra della chiesa palladiana, da cui i frati Cappuccini tuttora ricavano frutta, ortaggi, olio e miele. Gioielli generalmente visitabili soltanto attraverso agenzie specializzate.
Con Tudy Sammartini, per esempio, che è architetto del paesaggio, autrice del volume The Secret Gardens of Venice e, attraverso l’agenzia Follow Me, anche guida d’eccezione per piccoli gruppi, si visitano giardini chiusi al pubblico, come quelli di Palazzo Barbaro, per poi fare colazione in compagnia dei proprietari del palazzo. Iva Scarpa dell’agenzia Rallo propone invece il programma Gondola nei giardini: in questo caso i giardini, selezionati in collaborazione con il Wigwam Club for Venice Historic Gardens, associazione dedicata alla promozione e salvaguardia dei giardini storici di Venezia e della Riviera del Brenta con soci in tutta Europa, si raggiungono a bordo delle tipiche imbarcazioni. La stessa associazione ha inoltre introdotto da quest’anno, nel secondo weekend di ottobre, il primo Festival of Venetian Gardens: per tre giorni sono stati aperti al pubblico, a Venezia e lungo il fiume Brenta, circa dodici giardini d’interesse storico e ambientale, da visitare in compagnia di architetti del paesaggio, storici e botanici. Le visite includevano programmi musicali, letture e assaggi di prodotti locali. Tutte idee che l’agenzia Rallo ripropone durante l’intero arco dell’anno a gruppi aziendali.
I giardini sono infine un elemento d’incanto in più di cui godono alcuni alberghi e historic venues per eventi: l’Hotel dei Dogi del Gruppo Boscolo, per esempio, si trova nello storico Palazzo Rizzo Patarol con giardino, nel quartiere della Madonna dell’Orto a Cannaregio, zona degli antichi orti lambita dalla laguna nord. È un esempio unico di giardino con rimaneggiamenti di gusto romantico – ponticello, ghiacciaia, antiche rovine – e un’elegante loggia palladiana, fra rose, ortensie e bulbacee.
Un giardino-scrigno di 200 mq è invece quello del seicentesco Palazzo Benzon sul Canal Grande, rivelatosi un suggestivo spazio per eventi e reception in supporto al salone per 200 persone e alle altre sette sale del piano nobile del palazzo. Ricevimenti e cockatil party possono trovare posto anche nei giardini di grandi musei: si pensa al giardino della Peggy Guggenheim Collection (150 persone) o al giardino all’italiana del museo di Ca’ Rezzonico (200 posti circa).
Le isole della memoria
La storia delle isole che circondano la laguna di venezia è stata, nel corso dei secoli, un alternarsi di gloria e di decadimento. Sviluppatesi intorno ad attività autonome, spesso a carattere religioso, alcune isole sono state poi riconvertite in complessi ospedalieri caduti poi in disuso. È grazie all’accurato lavoro di restauro e all’attività turistica e congressuale che queste isole sono rinate.
Pioniera la Fondazione Giorgio Cini, istituita negli anni Cinquanta dal conte Vittorio Cini, cui si deve il restauro dell’isola di San Giorgio Maggiore: gravemente degradata da quasi centocinquant’anni di utilizzo militare, è stata recuperata e reinserita nella vita di Venezia come centro internazionale di attività culturali ed eventi. Il centro culturale, ricavato in un monastero benedettino, ha accolto fra tanti due incontri dei G7 svoltisi nel 1980 e nel 1987, e nel 2005 la First World Conference on The Future of Science.
Un vasto complesso di edifici caratterizza l’isola di San Servolo, che per un millennio fu sede monastica, nel Settecento divenne ospedale militare e poi, fino al 1978 ospedale psichiatrico. La Provincia di Venezia ne ha avviato il recupero negli anni Novanta trasformandola in uno spazio di promozione multiculturale. Nel 2003 si sono conclusi i restauri e oggi l’isola è sede di istituzioni come il centro di formazione per gli artigiani europei e la Venice International University. Alcuni degli spazi del complesso sono disponibili per congressi ed eventi privati; il gestore è la società San Servolo Servizi I locali del’istituto possono accogliere eventi di respiro internazionale. In tale ambito è la San Servolo Servizi, che mette a disposizione otto sale fino a 240 posti per un totale di 550 posti e le 153 camere del Centro Soggiorno e Studi, disponibili esclusivamente in occasione di congressi (non è un ricettivo alberghiero).
Isola dalle antichissime origini a sud della laguna, l’isola di San Clemente, fu nei secoli centro di ospitalità per i crociati e i pellegrini in Terra Santa, convento camaldolese, ospedale psichiatrico. Oggi è un ameno luogo di villeggiatura che ospita il lussuoso cinque stalle San Clemente Palace, inaugurato nel 2003. Il resort, risultato di un ottimo progetto di recupero degli edifici lasciati dalla storia, è dotato di 200 camere e tre ristoranti dislocati nell’isola, di cui il Ca’ dei Frati con splendida vista sulla laguna. Nel parco ci sono il centro congressi, il centro benessere, campi da tennis, piscina e golf a tre buche. Il motoscafo-navetta gratuito collega l’isola a Piazza San Marco 24 ore su 24.
Anche la più famosa isola del Lido ha la sua storia: è la spiaggia dei veneziani dai tempi della Belle Epoque, come testimoniano i lussuosi alberghi in stile liberty quali l’orientaleggiante Excelsior Palace o il fastoso Des Bains. La capacità alberghiera dell’isola ha raggiunto oggi le 1.600 camere. Nel 1937 ha preso il via all’Excelsior la Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica di Venezia, determinando la costruzione, nei pressi dell’albergo, del Palazzo del Cinema e del Palazzo del Casinò estivo. Con l’accrescersi del seguito e del prestigio del festival, giunto quest’anno alla 62° edizione, il Lido è divenuto mano a mano anche sede richiestissima per congressi internazionali. Il Palazzo del Casinò ha smesso quindi la sua funzione originaria e, insieme al PalaGalileo di recente costruzione e allo stesso Palazzo del Cinema, costituisce oggi il centro congressi di Venezia gestito, dal 2002 dalla società Venice Convention.
Sulle tracce di Casanova
Il ricordo del leggendario cavaliere Giovanni Giacomo Casanova, nato a Venezia nel 1725, è sempre vivo nella mente dei veneziani. Avventuriero e letterato, giocatore e libertino, uomo d’affari e spia, l’eroe veneziano ha conosciuto anche le carceri di Venezia, dalle quali è riuscito comunque a fuggire. Al personaggio sono stati dedicati numerosi film, fra cui l’ultimo, il Casanova hollywoodiano di Lasse Hallstrom interamente girato nei palazzi e nei musei di Venezia. Uno dei luoghi prediletti dal cavaliere era la Sala del Ridotto di Palazzo Dandolo che, dal 1638 alla chiusura nel 1774, fu il primo casinò pubblico al mondo. Divenuto successivamente teatro e oggi conference and events venue di proprietà dell’Hotel Monaco & Grand Canal, la sala è molto sfruttata dalle agenzie di spettacolo, che vi ambientano serate di entertainment a tema.
Venezia Classic, per esempio, specializzata nel Settecento veneziano, vi organizza serate di gioco d’azzardo d’epoca in compagnia di Casanova in persona. «Abbiamo riprodotto i giochi d’azzardo dell’epoca su tela e muniamo gli ospiti di gettoni anch’essi calcati sugli originali» spiega il titolare Fabio Moresco. «Ma le attività che organizziamo a corollario di meeting o incentive invitano a partecipare anche ad altre esperienze del passato: lezione di minuetto con ballo in maschera al magnifico Palazzo Pisani Moretta, oppure la decorazione di maschere veneziane nel laboratorio dell’antica Scuola Grande San Giovanni Evangelista fondata nel 1261». Le Scuole sono confraternite laiche alle cui attività di beneficenza e tutela delle professioni si dedicavano, dal Medioevo alla caduta della Repubblica, cittadini della classe media, in palazzi prestigiosi. «La Scuola di San Giovanni Evangelista mette oggi a disposizione un prestigioso salone settecentesco e altre tre sale per eventi privati eventi».
Anche l’agenzia Nuova Accademia di Venezia è ricca di proposte. «Animiamo le cene di gala o i balli in maschera con artisti in ricchi costumi veneziani, giocolieri e musicisti» dice Paola Brussa, socia dell’agenzia. «Oppure, se l’evento è breve e i partecipanti non hanno tempo da dedicare allo shopping, organizziamo direttamente in albergo dei “mercatini” con i prodotti dell’artigianato tipico». In una messa in scena suggestiva si vedono cosi all’opera gli artigiani del vetro di Murano o gli artisti delle maschere veneziane, donne in costume che eseguono merletti e anche un falegname che da un pezzo di tronco scolpisce la forcola per un remo di gondola.
Per chi ha tempo di fare shopping o per gli accompagnatori, ecco invece i personal shopper di Follow Me, un’agenzia che procura servizi personalizzati di accompagnamento, per singoli o piccoli gruppi, in percorsi che si addentrano nel cuore di Venezia alla scoperta degli artigiani e delle tradizioni. «Portiamo per esempio gli ospiti in un atelier che esegue maschere personali dal calco del proprio viso, o in una saponeria del Cinquecento che produce saponi con essenze personalizzate» racconta Marta Fontana di Follow Me. «Procuriamo inoltre biglietti per l’esclusivo Ballo del Doge che si svolge il sabato di Carnevale a Palazzo Pisani Moretta o alla festa di chiusura della Mostra del Cinema». Negli ultimi tempi riscuotono successo le visite notturne in compagnia di Alberto Tosio Fei, autore del volume Venetian Legends, sulle tracce dei fantasmi veneziani e chissà se… tra le nebbie silenziose delle calli più sperdute della laguna, non appaia il cavalier Casanova in persona!

Legendary. Ageless. All the same, Venice is a city on the move, committed to leveraging its position as a quality tourism and events destination. The itineraries, activities and locations mentioned may be classics, but are certainly worth considering as they have unexpected elements of surprise for events organisers.
Venice is plunged headlong into projects for fostering quality tourism, proving that it isn’t a museum-city resting on its laurels???. Premium palazzos and neglected districts are being revitalised, and new businesses are being sought to attract production activities that are appropriate to this very unique urban fabric.
An eye-catching initiative is the project for a new Palazzo del Cinema over on the Lido island: a futuristic 2,500-seat venue, not only for screening films but also for conferences and events. Last May, architects’ studio 5+1 & Ricciotti was declared winner of the international competition and the new building (awaiting funds) is an example of some contemporary design focusing on “brushing away the cobwebs” on the city’s image. Then there is architect Santiago Calatrava’s new Grand Canal bridge, christened Ponte di Luce (Bridge of Light) for its transparency and nocturnal lighting, now awaiting final inspection before it becomes operational and connects Venice railway station with the mainland.
In November 2007 the 857m-high funicular People Mover will be ready. The service will connect the huge Tronchetto mainland car park with Piazzale Roma and the railway station in just three and a half minutes (instead of 20 minutes by land).
The recovery of the abandoned industrial plant over on the Giudecca island is on the same wavelength. The project began last July with 3,000 smq over three floors, split into 21 lots, made available to small and medium businesses, encouraging them to return to the city. Several areas at the Arsenale, Venice’s Medieval fortified dockyard, which occupies one seventh of the entire city, were given over to the Arsenale di Venezia company two years ago so it could manage their complete valorisation and recovery. Part of the property has already been rented by the Venice Biennale as exhibition space. One of the historic mansions that has recently opened its doors to private events is Ca’ Mocenigo Gambara, built in the 12th century near the Accademia Bridge, and frescoed by Canaletto, now completely renovated and open since last May, operating as a meeting centre for up to 100 participants.
Gondolas and champagne
No one should pass up the chance to be rowed through Venice on one of its iconic wooden craft and no moment could be better than the stillness of the night, gliding along the Lagoon’s canals, sipping a glass of champagne ... Sleek and black, the 11.20m long, 1.42m wide, flat-bottomed gondolas have raised curving prow and stern, and are used for people transport, nowadays mainly tourists. Manoeuvring a gondola through Venice’s narrow canals is no mean feat, and doing it successfully doesn’t just depend on the gondolier’s skill, but also on the gondola’s construction. Which is a painstaking task as each boat has 280 or so components, and requires at least eight types of wood. The planks are curved by wetting then flame-heating the wood, still undertaken in the traditional squèri boatbuilding yards. The historic Squèro Tramontin, which has been in business since 1887, is worth visiting to see the master gondoliers at work.
Then there are gondolas of monumental dimensions, prows transformed into sea monsters, dragons and other allegorical motifs, used for water parades during Venice’s numerous festivals and pageants, including the Historic Regatta (first Sunday in September), the “Regata delle Befane” (on the Epiphany) and the masked water cortège during Carnival, called the bissone (which means the great serpent).
“The best place for watching a historic parade is from the water,” comments Alessandro Sbrogiò, owner of the Venetian DMC Target Motivation. “And that’s where we step in, providing lightweight boats to take corporate groups to the front, to see the water cortege up close”. On the subject of boats, Target Motivation can also transform a spectator into an actor, organising dragon boat regattas, in rowing boats that carry groups of up to 30 people. Not a bad idea for a team building programme, with teams competing on the water. Target Motivation is an all-round DMC and an expert PCO, handling about 1,000 top-rank allotments in Venice’s best hotels, employing university professors to prepare unique itineraries and programmes. “One programme that really took off with our clients was the bacari tour, around Venice’s ancient taverns,” continues Alessandro Sbrogiò. “We split our guests into small groups and we take them off to taste typical specialities and wine in three bacari, rather like the Spaniards do with tapas. It’s a fun way to socialise for a couple of hours: the programme closes with a lunch or dinner for everyone in a historic restaurant”.
Secret gardens
Venice is the Italian historic centre with the most gardens. Quite a surprise! The squares and little piazzas called campi and campielli, from the Italian word for a field, were once precisely … green fields. Nowadays private gardens are tucked away from indiscreet gazes, set side by side behind the palazzos to create ample stretches of greenery. In part, the credit for the survival of these beautiful flower and kitchen gardens goes to religious orders, and the varied vegetation is a legacy of the Venetian microclimate, which differs from north to south of the Lagoon: Mediterranean on Giudecca, but continental north of the Lagoon because of the cold Bora wind.
Several private gardens are on specialised itineraries and two worth mentioning are the 17th-century Palazzo Cappello, in the Santa Croce district, which is the Regional Superintendency Office for Culture and Heritage, where seasonal blossom is a backdrop to the elegant neoclassical loggia, with neighbouring Palazzo Gradenigo, also 1600s, whose two pergolas and colourful flower beds are the property of descendents of the noble family.
Then there is the San Francesco della Vigna convent cloister and gardens at Castello. The 14th-century complex bears the name of the ancient vineyard that Doge Ziani’s son donated to the monks in 1253. On Giudecca, the Redentore convent cloister and gardens linger unchanging in the shadow of Palladio’s church, and are still a source of fruit, vegetables, oil and honey for the monks. Such gems are usually only open to visits organised by specialist agencies.
The Follow Me agency, for instance, works with Tudy Sammartini, a landscape architect and author of The Secret Gardens of Venice, but she is also an outstanding guide for small groups, whom she takes to visit gardens that are closed to the public, like those at Palazzo Barbaro, followed by lunch with the owners. Iva Scarpa and her Rallo agency offer the Gondola in gardens programme, and in this case the typical Venetian boat is used to reach the gardens, which are selected with the assistance of the Wigwam Club for Venice Historic Gardens, an association with members throughout Europe, promoting and protecting historic gardens in Venice and along the River Brenta.
This year the same association also inaugurated its Festival of Venetian Gardens, on the second weekend in October. For three days, about 12 gardens of historical and environmental interest opened to the public throughout Venice and along the River Brenta. Visits were guided by landscape architects, historians and botanists, and included concerts, readings and tasting of local produce. The Rallo agency will organise similar events all year round for corporate groups.
Last, but not least, gardens are an additional attraction offered by several hotels and historic event venues: the Boscolo Group’s Hotel dei Dogi, for instance, is located in the ancient Palazzo Rizzo Patarol, whose unique garden is remodelled in the Romantic style – bridge, ice house, historic ruins – complete with an elegant Palladian loggia amidst roses, hortensias and flowering bulbs.
On the Grand Canal, 17th-century Palazzo Benzon’s 200-sqm bijou garden turns out to be a delightful support venue for events and receptions held in the salon, with a capacity of 200, and the other seven rooms on the palazzo’s piano nobile. The great museums also have gardens that may be suitable for receptions and cocktail parties, for instance the Peggy Guggenheim Collection garden (150 persons) or Ca’ Rezzonico Museum’s Italian- style gardens (seats about 200).
History on the islands
Over the centuries, pages of glorious history and decline have been written for the islands in the Venetian lagoon. Several islands developed around independent activities, often of a religious nature, and were later converted into hospitals that then fell into disuse. These very same islands are now enjoying a revival thanks to meticulous restoration and the business brought by tourism and conference activities.
The Giorgio Cini Foundation was established in the 1950s by Count Vittorio Cini, to refurbish San Giorgio Maggiore, an island that had been devastated by almost 150 years of military use, which was then recovered and restored to Venetian life as an international cultural and events venue. The cultural centre was installed in a Benedictine monastery and actually hosted two G7 meetings in 1980 and in 1987, and in 2005 the First World Conference on The Future of Science.
The island of San Servolo features a vast building complex used as a monastery for 1,000 years, then converted into military hospital in the 1700s and later turned into a psychiatric hospital, until 1978. Venice Provincial Authorities initiated its recovery in the 1990s, when it was transformed into a multicultural promotion unit. Restoration was completed in 2003 and now the island hosts several institutions including, the Venice International University. The complex offers several areas for meetings and private events, and is managed by San Servolo Servizi. San Servolo Servizi can provide meeting rooms with a capacity of up to 240, for a total of 550, as well as 153 guestrooms available only for delegates (no hotel accommodation is available here).
To the south of the Lagoon there is the island of San Clemente, which for many centuries offered hospitality to crusaders and pilgrims en route to and from the Holy Land, and was a convent and then a psychiatric hospital. Today it is home to the luxurious 5-star San Clemente Palace, inaugurated in 2003. The resort is the end result of an excellent recovery project that refurbished the historic buildings. There are 200 guestrooms and three restaurants located around the island, including Ca’ dei Frati, with its splendid view of the Lagoon. The hotel includes a conference centre, spa, tennis courts, swimming pool and a three-hole golf course. A free motorboat shuttle connects the islands to St Mark’s Square 24/24.
The most famous of all is Lido island, and it also has its story to tell: it’s been the Venetian “seaside” since the Belle Époque, which explains the luxury Art Nouveau hotels, like the oriental-style Excelsior Palace or the plush Des Bains. The island currently has 1,600 hotel rooms. The Venice International Film Festival began here back in 1937, and with it came the Palazzo del Cinema and the summer casino venue of Palazzo del Casinò. As the Festival evolved in size and prestige (it celebrated its 62nd birthday in 2005), demand also soared for the Lido as an international conference location. Now Palazzo del Casinò’s original function has declined and, alongside the Palazzo del Cinema and the recently-built PalaGalileo, it is now the Venice conference centre managed by Venice Convention.
In Casanova’s footsteps
Venetians have a soft spot for the legendary knight, Giovanni Giacomo Casanova, born in Venice in 1725. This Venetian hero was an adventurer and man of letters, gambler and libertine, businessman and spy, and has also been the “star” of quite a few films, latest in line is Lasse Hallstrom’s Hollywood Casanova, filmed totally in Venice’s mansions and museums. One of Casanova’s favourite spots was Palazzo Dandolo’s Sala del Ridotto, which was the world’s first public casino from 1638 until its closure in 1774. Later it was used as a theatre and today it is a conference and events venue owned by the Hotel Monaco & Grand Canal. The location is much-loved by entertainment agencies, who stage theme evenings there.
Venezia Classic, to name just one, is a Venetian 1700s specialist, organizing old-style gaming evenings in the company of Casanova “in person”. “We reproduce period gambling tables and supply guests with tokens, which are also replicas of historic originals,” explains owner Fabio Moresco. “We also organise post event activities that are a journey into the past: minuet lessons for a masked ball held at the magnificent Palazzo Pisani Moretta, or decorating Venetian masks at a workshop in the historic Scuola Grande San Giovanni Evangelista, founded in 1261”. The “Scuole” were lay middle-class brotherhoods active from the Middle Ages until the fall of the Republic, whose members gathered in prestigious palazzos to perform acts of charity and safeguard the professions. “Today the San Giovanni Evangelista institution offers a striking 18th-century salon and another three rooms for private events”.
The Nuova Accademia di Venezia agency also spoils its clients for choice. “We add spice to gala dinners or masked balls with artistes in lavish Venetian costume, jugglers and musicians,” says Paola Brussa, partner in the agency. “Or if it’s a short event and participants don’t have time for shopping, we set up “little markets” directly in the hotel, offering typical craft items”. So an evocative scenario may be makers of Murano glass or Venetian masks at work, or lacemakers in costume, or even a carpenter carving gondola rowlocks from a piece of wood.
For those who do have time for shopping, or for those accompanying them, the Follow Me agency will provide escorts to order, including personal shoppers, for individuals or small groups, who are taken to the heart of Venice where they can discover crafts and traditions. “For example, we go to a workshop that will make a personal mask from a cast of the client’s face, or to a 1500s soap factory that makes soaps with customized essences,” says Follow Me’s Marta Fontana. “We are also able to provide tickets for the exclusive Doge’s Ball, held on the Saturday of Carnival, at Palazzo Pisani Moretta, or the closing party for the Film Festival”. I have resided in Italy since 1983 and I have bilingual Italian – English language skills. Except some brief time out to have my two children, I have been a linguist for over 25 years and I am a competent translator and interpreter in a number of fields.
I have produced an extensive portfolio of translations for many sectors, including: tourist guidebooks and brochures, books on local folklore, prestigious art catalogues, olive oil production guides, winery flyers, paper manufacturing newsletters, historical musical biography, 18th-century Italian libretto translations for DVD subtitles, many websites ranging from charcuterie to the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics, even a history of the Ferrari car company, brochures for industrial design giants Alessi, Guzzini and Frau, EU funding requests and reports, contracts, psychology research, press releases and websites for top Italian designers including Cavalli, Armani, Ferré, Dolce & Gabbana.
In 2007 I provided translations to White Star-National Geographic for (amongst others) Legends of Rock and City Squares of the World; to Dalmatian Press for a series of children’s books on wild animals.
I have recently worked on the 2008 edition of the Gambero Rosso Italian wine guide, and I translate sections of their website. I also work for ARTA Abruzzo organic agriculture agency. I coordinated a series of art books for a major US publisher, a series of eight books on Abruzzo, for CARSA-APTR and, also for CARSA, extensive EU-funded territorial guides to the Castelli Romani area.
I am a pro bono contributor to translations for http://www.rokpa.org/, and a Pro bono interpreter and translator for Ortona Municipal Council and Canadian Veterans.
