A definite scam Nov 18, 2011

If nothing else in this email, the words "You transfer the balance" clearly reveal the scam nature of this "job".

New tricks Nov 18, 2011

This is a refined version of a classic scam targetting unwary translators. I believe there is a forum somewhere on proz about it but I can't find the link...

Incredible... Nov 18, 2011

I'm in awe at how creative these guys can get...

Why don't they send you the money via Western Union? One could evaluate WU services perfectly that way too, no need for an intermediary check

Kind of surprising such scammers haven't contracted native English speakers.... Nov 18, 2011

...with something above a second-grade level of language proficiency to write their mass-distributed messages. Surely the extra money involved in such an investment would be justified in terms of the added credibility acquired.

BLESSINGS OF GOD TO YOU!

Any excuse to get us going to our local branch of Western Union! Only I wouldn't really call it "shopping"...

I was contacted yesterday. Nov 19, 2011

Hi!

Just to give a extra warning, I got this same spam mail from Translators cafe. They just get your email from there and contact you just as if it was a regular jobb.
"Swedish speakers wanted..."

If you contact them , then they send you this "selling" mail.

Paula

By looking at his full name Nov 19, 2011

you should be alerted this is a possible scam. it is too common and regular, hence very likely a fake name.

I've received an email from someone with an existing real name, except that the provided name and the address didn't match. And this scammer intended to pay with Travelers' checks.

The scammer must be skimming what people say in fora. I got the same message from a Pius Palmer which looks like a homework done on a "too common and regular" name.

same here Nov 24, 2011

Today I've been contacted by parkinsjerkins who I have immediately identified as a scammer. What worries me though is that he/she bothered to pay a membership, and some fellow translators, especially newcomers, may easily fall into this pitfall.
