on what you mean by “freeware” and “CAT tools”.
Putting “freeware” and “open source” together seems to imply that by “freeware” you really mean “free software”. But technically speaking freeware is usually not free software. So it depends partly on what you mean by “freeware”.
It also depends on what exactly classifies as a CAT tool. Some time ago, someone in the forums here mentioned POedit as being a “CAT tool”. Personally I wouldn’t call it that, but if there really are people who do, then vi + gettext (or other strange combinations that I wouldn’t normally call CAT tools) will also need to count.

But I have occasionally had to use Open Office freeware for word processing in cybercafes. I think it is good for a free service, but some minor bugs and slight incompatibilities with other SW I sometimes use prevent me from using it instead of the same old MS clunkware.
BTW, in my simplistic way, I understand "CAT" tools as including word processing or spreadsheet software, because they assist me and are on my computer... and by freeware I understand "free software"...

When Across begin was free, but now you have to pay near 1.000 Euro.

Across is still free. Only the server version for agencies is paid.

While I am a firm believer in free demos and in knowing what you are buying before spending a lot of money, I myself am not IT-literate enough to set up and use a CAT without help.
Free software may be an excellent form of marketing, and a great help to translators who are setting out and are not yet earning much. All the same, somebody, somewhere has to develop these tools and in the end make a living by them.
So I pay for the products I use, and have been extremely glad of the professional help I have received along the way.

Freeware and OSS (open source software) are two completely different things. As far as I know, there is no open source CAT tool. It would be a great idea though, if a group of freelance programmers and translators collaborated on working on one. The community could probably come up with something pretty great that continues to evolve over time (and not to mention, free).

There are at least three free CAT programs: OmegaT, Anaphraseus, Esperantilo (the latter being a text editor with some CAT capabilities).
I use mostly OmegaT and Anaphraseus. I use Wordfast Classic and Wordfast Pro sometimes, but less than for 5% of my work.

Wordfast has a free version accessible through a web browser (freetm.com is the link I think). Importantly, it works well with an iPad, which is why I use it on the go sometimes.

Just downloaded the free demo pro-version of WF for Macs. As a new translator, I find it useful for getting familiar with the main features of these tools but I will also try Omega T and others before committing to pay for anything while I try to establish myself.
I am under the impression most companies will offer you a free-trial at least.

OmegaT is a free standalone translation memory application written in Java. It's a cross-platform application, so you could use a Microsoft O/S, a Linux O/S like Ubuntu, etc.

Dear Sean,
could you please explain better the difference between freeware and OSS? I mean, I know they are two different way of meaning 'free', but I know that the description of freeware and OSS is based on 4 and 10 points, and most softwares that are positive to a project can be classified positive also for the other. Then, both freeware and OSS mostly uses the same licence.
