Who were the English-Chinese interpreters during the Obama-Xi Summit at Sunnylands?

Cyrus Chiang, Chinese Native, MTI Student :

The Chinese interpreter is Sun Ping, age 32. He was admitted in Nanjing Foreign Language School in 1993 and then in Beijing Foreign Language University.

Kim Gisu:

Following diplomatic protocol, each side had an interpreter to interpret into the other side's language. From various photos floating around cyberspace, it seems like for the American side it was a Mr. Brown (English to Chinese) and for the Chinese side it was a Mr. Sun (Chinese to English).

Biden: LaGuardia like a 'third world country'
CNN's Dana Davidsen

(CNN) – LaGuardia airport is notorious for older crowded terminals and other constraints that contribute to horrid flight delays. And Vice President Joe Biden doesn’t appear to be a big fan.

"If I blindfolded someone and took them at 2 o'clock in the morning into the airport in Hong Kong and said 'where do you think you are?' They would say, 'this must be America. This is a modern airport,'" he said on Thursday. "If I took them blindfolded and took them to LaGuardia airport in New York, he would like 'I must be in some third world country.' I'm not joking."

来的多、去的少 Feb 18, 2014

Steve,

http://www.uscis.gov/news/naturalization-fact-sheet

The United States has a long history of welcoming immigrants from all parts of the world. During the last decade, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) welcomed more than 6.6 million naturalized citizens into the fabric of our nation. In fiscal year 2013 through May, approximately 503,104 individuals have been naturalized.

Yes, I'm sure it's a very negligible number that give up their U.S. citizenship; and most who do are doing it solely out of financial considerations.

I suspect those who are taking advantage of the current birth-tourism boom most likely haven't thought through the income tax consequences for future years.

There's a US-China Income Tax Convention though, that in some situations you don't have to pay income taxes on both sides ...

Birth tourism Feb 23, 2014

Steve,

从你提供的链接看来,去年至少有一万中国 "anchor babies'' 在美国出生。
http://world.time.com/2013/11/27/chinese-women-are-flocking-to-the-u-s-to-have-babies/
At least 10,000 such Chinese babies were born in America last year, according to an estimate by an online platform dedicated to monitoring and rating confinement centers for Chinese women giving birth in the States.

与美国近年来每年约四百万的新生儿相比,再考虑到美国近年来出生率的下降趋势,这一万中国婴儿可是个不小的贡献。不过,这种 birth-tourism 恐怕好景不长。

BTW, Arcadia is really a nice place to live in. I do miss it.

Birth Tourism Feb 23, 2014

Yueyin,

Here's a transcript of one of the episodes of "To the Contrary" hosted by Bonnie Erbé. I saw it on PBS a while ago. It talks about the problem of the burgeoning business of "birth tourism", or "maternity tourism".

Thanks, QHE, for the quotes. I haven't heard of Arthur H. Smith until now. I'm going to send for a copy of "Chinese Characteristics". They have it as a classic reprint in paperback at Amazon.

I haven't read 柏楊's 醜陋的中國人 either. My dad once mentioned it in his letter to me at the time it was released. But I was so busy with work, there was no time to look into it. Besides I thought to myself: what is there that I didn't experience firsthand already?

Legal but highly unethical Feb 24, 2014

    Steve,

Thanks for the links. I agree with Bonnie Erbe: “The practice is legal through a constitutional loophole, but is highly unethical.” Nevertheless, it is still illegal to use a private home or an apartment as a maternity hotel disturbing other people’s life. On the other hand, I also agree with the child’s father Mr. Bo: “The citizenship is just a piece of paper, but to integrate into America is a very gradual process. To integrate into American society, to integrate into the American masses, to become a real American, this is a very long process.” There are still a lot more headaches he and his child have to face in the years to come. They should know that opportunities come with responsibilities.
